Shel Silverstein Poems

Where the Sidewalk Ends

Where the sidewalk ends, the fun begins

A world of magic and endless grins

With giants and fairies and talking trees

The perfect place to let your imagination free

There’s a land of wind and ghosts

And a sky filled with chocolate hosts

Where you can be anyone or anything

And dream of a life with endless zing

So come with me to this secret place

Where the sidewalk ends without a trace

And let’s make a world of our own

Where happiness reigns, and we are never alone

The Giving Tree

Once there was a giving tree

Whose branches stretched far and free

She gave her apples, her leaves, her shade

And watched as her gifts were happily made

As time went by, the tree grew old

Her branches withered, her bark turned cold

But still, she gave what she had left

And watched as her love was silently kept

In the end, the tree was just a stump

But the boy who once sat on her rump

Remembered the tree’s selfless deed

And vowed to live with love and heed

The Unicorn

A long time ago when the earth was green

And there was more kinds of animals than you’ve ever seen

And they run around free while the world was young

And the magic of the unicorn was still sung

The unicorn was a happy beast

With a mane of gold and a heart of peace

He’d play with the children and dance with the stars

And light up the night with his glowing bars

But one day, the men came with their spears

And the unicorn felt the sting of their fears

He ran and ran, but it was no use

For the men kept coming, and he felt the abuse

In the end, the unicorn was gone

And the men felt nothing but remorse and wrong

They knew then, what they had done

And wished they could undo their destruction

The Missing Piece

In a world of perfect circles

Lived a missing piece, feeling feeble

It longed to find its place in the sun

And be whole, no longer undone

So it rolled and rolled, searching far and wide

But every time, it felt empty inside

For it couldn’t fit in, no matter how hard it tried

And the missing piece often cried

But one day, it met another piece just like it

And suddenly, the world seemed lit

Together, they rolled and laughed and played

Feeling complete, no longer afraid

The lesson learned, the missing piece moved on

And though it was once alone, it was now a con

A part of something greater, something grand

And it knew then, it had found its place in the land

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout

Would not take the garbage out

She’d wash the dishes and scrub the floors

But the garbage pile just grew and roared

Her mother begged, her father pleaded

But Sarah wouldn’t listen, she just retreated

Into her world of books and rhyme

Where garbage heaps were no longer a crime

But one day, the garbage pile exploded

And Sarah was left, feeling demoted

She realized then, the value of work

And from that day on, she didn’t shirk

The lesson learned, the garbage gone

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout moved on

And though she still loved her books and rhyme

She now knew the value of taking the time

Smart

My dad gave me one dollar bill

‘Cause I’m his smartest son,

And I swapped it for two shiny quarters

‘Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters

And traded them to Lou

For three dimes – I guess he didn’t know

That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates

And just ’cause he can’t see

He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,

And four is more than three!

And then I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs

Down at the seed-feed store,

And the fool gave me five pennies for them,

And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,

And he got red in the cheeks

And closed his eyes and shook his head–

Too proud of me to speak!

A Light in the Attic

There’s a light in the attic

And it’s shining just for me

I must climb the rickety ladder

To find out what could it be

Is it a monster or a ghost

Or something else that’s scary

Or is it just a box of toys

That’s waiting there for me to carry

I slowly climb the ladder

And reach the attic’s door

And slowly open it to see

What the light is shining for

And there it is, just plain as day

A beam of light, so bright and gay

It’s shining on a pile of junk

And I realize, I’ve been plunked

The Kid Who Turned Into a TV Set

Once upon a time, in a strange land

There was a kid, who had a strange brand

He could turn into a TV set

With knobs and buttons and even a remote, you bet

He’d sit and flicker, and show some shows

And people would watch, through highs and lows

And then one day, he got stuck in the mode

And no matter how he tried, he couldn’t decode

The people were shocked, and the kid was scared

He knew he had to be repaired

So he called a repairman, who came with his tools

And after some banging, and fiddling, and jewels

The kid was fixed, and he was fine

And he promised never to turn into a TV again

For he knew then, that being himself was the best

And he didn’t need a screen, to pass the test

The Chicken Problem

Chickens here, chickens there,

Chickens, chickens everywhere!

They peck and cluck and strut all day,

And in my garden they like to play.

I tried to chase them all away,

But they kept coming back to stay.

So I got an idea in my head,

And this is what I said.

If you chickens want to stay,

You got to work for me each day.

Dig up worms and bugs and such,

And I won’t mind you munching much.

So now those chickens work for me,

And my garden’s looking lovely!

So if you’ve got a chicken problem too,

Just give ’em a job to do!

Where the Sidewalk Ends

Where the Sidewalk Ends

And the streetlights dim,

Lies a magical place

Where dreams can begin.

Where the grass is green,

And the sky is blue,

Where you can be whoever you want,

And your dreams can come true.

It’s a place of wonder,

Where anything is possible,

Where the worries of the world,

Are completely unstoppable.

So come take my hand,

And let’s venture to this place,

Where the sidewalk ends,

And adventure takes its place.

The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree,

So kind and true,

Gave all she had,

To make someone’s dreams come true.

She gave her branches,

Her trunk, and her fruit,

All to a boy,

Who loved her, no dispute.

She gave and she gave,

Until nothing was left,

But the love in her heart,

That she never bereft.

The Giving Tree,

Is a lesson to learn,

To give of ourselves,

And to love without concern.

Sick

Sick in bed,

With nothing to do,

I stare out the window,

At the world so new.

But then I discover,

A world inside me,

Where I can imagine,

And be whoever I please.

I can be a pirate,

Or a king on a throne,

I can travel the world,

Or stay safe at home.

Being sick isn’t so bad,

When you have a mind,

That can take you places,

And leave your body behind.

The Missing Piece

The missing piece

Is a puzzle to me

I search high and low

To find what I need

The missing piece

Could be anywhere

But until I find it

I’ll be incomplete and bare

The missing piece

Is a weight on my mind

I’ll keep searching, though

Until the answer I find

The missing piece

Will complete me one day

And until that moment

I’ll keep searching away

The Giving Tree

The giving tree

Is always there for me

With branches wide

And a trunk so sturdy

The giving tree

Shares its shade and fruit

And in its embrace

I feel oh so soothed

The giving tree

Gives all it has to give

And in its selflessness

It shows me how to live

The giving tree

Is a symbol of love

And I’ll always cherish

Its branches up above

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout

Would not take the garbage out

Her piles of trash

Were quite the sight

But still she refused

To clean up each night

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout

Left garbage everywhere about

Her mom and dad

Would often shout

But still she refused

To clean up each night

Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout

Had garbage up to her snout

And though she tried

To ignore the clout

She finally cleaned up

One fateful night

Sick

I’m feeling quite sick

My head is pounding so

My stomach churns

And my nose won’t stop the flow

I’m feeling quite sick

And I can’t leave my bed

My body aches

And my throat is red

I’m feeling quite sick

And I want to feel well

But for now I’ll rest

And let my body heal and swell

I’m feeling quite sick

But I’ll get better soon

And when I do

I’ll dance under the moon

The Light in the Attic

There’s a light in the attic

That shines bright and true

It guides me through the dark

And helps me see anew

The light in the attic

Is a beacon of hope

And when I’m lost

It helps me cope

The light in the attic

Is a friend to me

And when I’m feeling down

It reminds me to be free

The light in the attic

Is a reminder of life

And with its gentle glow

I can conquer any strife
